The number of US “junk stocks” with a stock price below $1 has surged this year

As of December 1st, there are as many as 557 stocks listed in the US with trading prices below $1 per share. This number is much higher than the approximately 10 stocks at the beginning of 2021. Among these 557 stocks, up to 464 are listed on NASDAQ, which sets a requirement that company stock prices must not remain below $1 per share continuously; otherwise, they will face delisting risks. However, companies with stock prices below $1 can theoretically maintain their listing status for over a year before being delisted by NASDAQ. As struggling companies seek to raise their stock prices above $1, reverse stock splits have also surged in the US market this year – the number of reverse stock splits has reached 255 times, surpassing last year’s figure of 159 times.
